UPDATED: Safeguarding & DBS Requirements

Important info for Refs, Table Officials and Coaches!

This page was updated 27/09 following further clarifications based on feedback given.

In line with announcements made by BE, it is now mandatory for anyone over the age of 16 fulfilling one of the following roles to have completed some Safeguarding training and a DBS check:

  • Referee
  • Table official
  • Any club official e.g. bench personnel, statistician (if their team includes under 18's)
  • Coaches (if their team includes under 18's) - Coaches also need a Level 2 Coaching Qualification

If you ONLY intend to carry out local league matches and your anticipated cumulative official fees (excluding travel expenses) are likely to be under £1,000 for the whole season then the DBS can be completed under the Volunteer route which should only cost £10.

Anyone that officiates at National League games will need to obtain the Enhanced check which does come at a higher cost.

Basketball England have in depth FAQ's up on their website about Safeguarding and DBS Checks, and there is also a guide attached at the bottom of this page.

We as a committee would go so far as to say that whilst we as a league do not require certificates for adult only teams, we believe that it may be in teams best interests to have at least one individual registered.

As a league, we have been offered some support for any coaches or bench personnel who require a safeguarding course. If there is sufficient interest, we will accept that offer and make the course available.

Please email any member of the committee should you have any queries.
